NEW YORK — The suspect in the ambush killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson expressed gratitude for the support he has received while awaiting trial at a New York City detention facility. Luigi Mangione, facing charges of murder and terrorism, made his first public comments through a newly launched website by his defense team.

Mangione, who was arrested following Thompson’s December 4 shooting in Manhattan, thanked supporters for their letters that have, according to him, transcended political and social divisions. “I am overwhelmed by — and grateful for — everyone who has written me to share their stories and express their support,” he posted on the website.

Thompson was shot from behind while walking on a Manhattan street, an act condemned by public officials including Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who stated, “This type of premeditated, targeted gun violence cannot and will not be tolerated.”

The shooting has also drawn criticism from Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who remarked on the dangerous narrative surrounding Mangione’s actions. “In some dark corners, this killer is being hailed as a hero. Hear me on this: He is no hero,” Shapiro said after Mangione’s arrest at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Upon his arrest, Mangione was found to have grievances about the health care system, which he detailed in writings discovered by law enforcement. He is charged with multiple infractions including first-degree murder and eight counts relating to weapons possession in both New York and Pennsylvania. Authorities allege that Mangione used a suppressed firearm in the attack.

Despite the evidence against him, Mangione has pleaded not guilty. The charges he faces in New York include first-degree murder, terrorism, and multiple counts of weapon possession. As the largest private insurance provider in the nation, Thompson’s murder has sparked debates around safety and violence in professional settings.

Just days before Christmas, Mangione was in court to hear the charges against him, marking a crucial moment as the case gathers national attention. The defense team’s website aims to provide accurate updates amid a flurry of inquiries related to his case, highlighting the overwhelming public interest in the unfolding legal proceedings.

As the trial approaches, police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Thompson’s killing and gathering additional evidence. His family has yet to make a statement, while community leaders and officials have urged for justice and conversation surrounding gun safety and responsibility.
