University Of Michigan Health West Grand Rapids Marathon

The inaugural University of Michigan Health-West Grand Rapids Marathon is set to take place on Sunday, October 20, offering renewed excitement in the local running community. This event has quickly become one of West Michigan‘s most inclusive races, with an emphasis on being ‘by runners, for runners.’ According to organizers, the marathon features a flat and fast course, ideal for athletes aiming to achieve personal bests and to qualify for the renowned Boston Marathon.

Don Kern, the Race Director, described the event’s mission, stating, “We’ve designed it to be welcoming to everyone, from first-time marathoners to experienced runners looking for a Boston qualifier. No one is a stranger on this course, and we celebrate every finish line crossed.”

The marathon weekend promises a rich itinerary, kicking off with the Shakeout Run at 8 a.m. and the Grand Rapids Kids Marathon in the afternoon on Saturday. Throughout the day, stage presentations by local experts will also be held, contributing to the community’s festive atmosphere.

On race day, the schedule is carefully arranged to accommodate a variety of participants. An early start is planned for the “Velocity Challenged,” followed by the Wheelchair and Hand Cycle Division starts, the Opening Ceremony, and then the official start at 8 a.m.

Greg Meyer, the Chief Community Officer for UM Health-West and the 1983 Boston Marathon champion, highlighted the communal values embedded in the event. “The Grand Rapids Marathon reflects everything we value as a community—support, encouragement, and a shared commitment to wellness,” he remarked. “This event brings us together to celebrate fitness and personal goals, and it’s a great way for our city to showcase its incredible spirit.”

Participants are anticipated to complete the race at varying times between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., concluding a day filled with physical challenges and community bonding.
