Vancouver Festival Attack Memorial Tribute

Vancouver, Canada — A devastating attack at a Filipino street festival in Vancouver has left families mourning the loss of their loved ones. The incident, which occurred last Saturday during the Lapu-Lapu Day Block Party, involved a speeding SUV that struck multiple attendees, resulting in 11 fatalities and numerous injuries.

Among the victims was Vicky Bjarnason, 56, who had been visiting her sons in Vancouver. Helgi Bjarnason, her son, recounted the harrowing moment when he was holding his mother’s hand as the SUV barreled toward them. Despite his efforts to pull her to safety, she was ripped from his grasp during the chaotic scene. Helgi, who is recovering in the hospital from serious injuries, said of his mother, “Our lives will never be the same without her.”

Vicky was remembered as adventurous and tireless, known for her boundless energy and love for her family. She had recently celebrated her 27th birthday with Helgi, singing Celine Dion’s “The Power of Love” together. Her actions on outings, from tubing at Cypress Mountain to camping, showed her spirit.

Ford Johansen, whose mother Jenifer Darbellay was also killed, reflected on the last joyful moments he shared with her shortly before the tragedy. “She was the light in every room,” he said. His seven-year-old sister, Darby, added, “I miss her laugh.”

The Vancouver police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, with the attacker, Adam Lo, facing eight counts of second-degree murder. The motive remains unclear, although authorities do not believe the incident was an act of terrorism.

Families are receiving support through various fundraising efforts as they navigate their grief. Alejandro Samper, who lost both his parents and sister in the attack, expressed disbelief, stating, “Canada is supposed to be a safe place.”

As communities gather to mourn, many remember the spirit of those lost and strive to ensure such a tragedy never happens again. “Please remember what we went through,” Mr. Johansen urged. “Please make it so it never happens again to anyone else.”
