Veteran Actor Ed Wheeler Passes Away at 88
Ed Wheeler, a renowned actor recognized for his work in television and film, passed away on August 21, 2024, at the age of 88. Wheeler died of respiratory failure stemming from pneumonia complications at Englewood Hospital in New Jersey, his wife, Messeret Stroman Wheeler, reported.
Wheeler embarked on his entertainment career in the 1970s, securing roles in television commercials for major brands like Luvs Diapers and Reynolds Wrap. Born on February 18, 1936, in Brooklyn, New York, he honed his acting skills under the tutelage of notable instructors such as Gene Frankel and Irving Vincent.
His breakthrough in film came with a role in ‘Broadcast News‘ (1987), alongside esteemed actors William Hurt, Albert Brooks, and Holly Hunter. Wheeler’s prolific career spanned numerous television series, including recurring guest appearances on ‘Law & Order’ from 1992 to 2004, and roles in ‘Blue Bloods,’ ‘Ed,’ ‘Soul Food,’ and ‘Third Watch.’
Wheeler’s stage career was equally notable, with credits in productions like ‘The Dance on Widow’s Row’ and ‘Zooman and the Sign,’ under the esteemed Negro Ensemble Company. His contributions to theater were recognized with the Living Legend Award at the 2017 National Black Theatre Festival held in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
In addition to his acting accomplishments, Wheeler and his wife Messeret, who is also an actor, established a production company and were active in supporting various artistic organizations. In 2023, they made their debut as co-executive producers with the short film ‘Keepers of the Flame,’ which examines the 1913 inaugural Women’s Suffrage Parade.
“His life was a testament to perseverance, creativity, and the power of generosity and kindness,” said Stroman Wheeler, who expressed deep gratitude for the support shown to the family.
Wheeler is survived by his wife Messeret, as well as nieces, nephews, and other extended family members. His legacy continues to inspire those who appreciated his work both on and off the screen.
