Ron Hale, a prominent figure in the world of soap operas, has passed away at the age of 78. The actor, known for his roles on “General Hospital” and “Ryan's Hope,” died unexpectedly at his home in St. George, South Carolina, on August 27. The cause of death has not been disclosed by authorities, but the news was confirmed by his niece, Lori Brown.

Born Ronald Hale Thigpen on January 2, 1946, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Hale was the son of the late James Ray Thigpen Sr. and Elinor Jane Doerr Thigpen. He pursued his education at Furman University in South Carolina, where he began to build his career in acting. Over the years, Hale gained recognition on television, in films, and onstage, performing in several productions at the Trustus Theatre in Columbia, South Carolina, a venue founded by his brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Kay Thigpen.

Hale’s illustrious career in television began with a small role in the 1968 series “N.Y.P.D.” He secured a position in the soap opera “Search for Tomorrow” a year later, which paved the way for his subsequent success. His other notable appearances included guest roles on “Matlock” and “MacGyver,” as well as a portrayal of Frank Sturgis in the 1976 film “All the President's Men.” In this role, he was part of the film detailing the Watergate scandal.

From 1975 to 1989, Hale captivated audiences as Dr. Rodger Coleridge in the ABC soap opera “Ryan’s Hope.” During his tenure, he played a complex character and was nominated twice for the Daytime Emmy Awards. Later, from 1995 to 2010, he became well-known for his portrayal of Mike Corbin, the father of mob boss Sonny Corinthos, in “General Hospital” and its spinoff, “Port Charles.” Hale’s departure from acting in 2010 led to his role being recast with Max Gail in 2018.

Following news of his death, “General Hospital” released a statement expressing their condolences, remarking on Hale’s skill and persona as a colleague. “The entire General Hospital Family is saddened to hear of Ron Hale’s passing,” the statement read. “We would like to extend our condolences to his loved ones during this difficult time. He was an incredible actor and an unforgettable colleague.”

Several of Hale’s colleagues and friends from the industry have also offered their tributes. Billy Warlock, a former co-star on “General Hospital,” shared his sadness on social media, stating, “Ron was an amazing talent and an even better friend. I will miss you.”

Ron Hale is survived by his nieces and nephews, including Lori Brown, Max Brabham, Erin Wilson, and Marc Brown. His contributions to the arts, particularly in the realm of soap operas, are fondly remembered by fans and colleagues alike.
