Veterans to Receive Monthly Disability Payments This Week

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Veterans across the United States will receive their monthly disability compensation payment this week. Approximately 6.2 million veterans are beneficiaries of tax-free disability benefits provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
These payments assist individuals with disabilities linked to illnesses, injuries, or events that occurred during their active military service. The program also supports surviving spouses, dependent children, and parents of service members who have died as a result of service-related conditions.
This month, payments for disability beneficiaries are scheduled for Friday, May 30. The amount a veteran receives depends on their disability rating and whether they have dependents.
Disability ratings range from 10 percent to 100 percent, indicating the severity of the condition. A higher rating results in a larger monthly payment. For example, a 10 percent disability rating allows for a monthly payment of $175.51, while a 20 percent rating increases this to $346.95.
Veterans with multiple service-connected conditions will have their ratings combined to determine their overall score. For instance, a veteran rated at 50 percent with a spouse would receive $1,208.04 each month, considering family circumstances.
The maximum possible monthly compensation for veterans is $4,544.23, which is only awarded under specific conditions such as having one child and two dependent parents. The VA has also indicated that further amounts could be available for veterans with more dependents.
The VA recently announced that its backlog of disability claims has seen a significant reduction, dropping below 200,000 claims for the first time since March 2023. A claim is considered backlogged if it has been pending for more than 125 days.
Since President‘s inauguration on January 20, the backlog has decreased by 25 percent. VA Secretary Doug Collins emphasized the progress made under the current administration’s effort to improve claims processing.
