Virginia Braces for Icy Conditions as Arctic Air Brings Snow
RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) — A fresh coating of snow Sunday could lead to icy conditions on roads across Central Virginia, with temperatures expected to remain below freezing through Thursday morning. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the region.
Most of Central Virginia is expected to see a dusting to 1 inch of snow, with higher totals of 3 inches or more predicted for areas north and west of Richmond. Southern counties are likely to experience little to no accumulation. The snow is expected to transition from rain early Sunday afternoon in Richmond, with scattered snow showers continuing north of the city.
“We’re monitoring the incoming data closely,” said a spokesperson from WWBT. “Residents should be alert for slick and icy conditions, especially as temperatures plunge Sunday evening with the arrival of arctic air.”
In Lynchburg, meteorologist George Flickinger noted that while Northern Virginia could see snow amounts exceeding 4 inches, Central and Southwest Virginia will likely experience lighter accumulations. “This will be more of a Winter Weather Advisory type snow for our area,” Flickinger said. “Road conditions will worsen west and north, with 1 to 3 inches expected in regions like Roanoke, Bedford, and Amherst.”
Snow is expected to end by Sunday night, but temperatures will remain below freezing through midweek, delaying any melting. Highs are forecast to reach only the 30s on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, with icy patches persisting on roads and sidewalks.
Residents are urged to exercise caution while traveling and to stay updated on weather conditions through local news outlets and the National Weather Service.
