Virginia Plumber Warns of Winter Pipe Freeze Risks, Offers Cost-Saving Tips
RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – As freezing temperatures grip central Virginia, local plumbing experts are urging residents to take proactive measures to prevent costly pipe damage. With winter storms bringing wind chills that can wreak havoc on home plumbing systems, Anytime Plumbing plumber Illya Davis shared essential tips to avoid expensive repairs.
“The number one tip is knowing where your outside water main shutoff is,” Davis said. “It’s indicated by a light blue cap and can be operated with a special key available at hardware stores for about $7.”
Davis emphasized that wind chill, rather than temperature alone, causes most pipe freezing incidents. He advised homeowners to inspect their crawl spaces during daylight hours, checking for any light penetration that could indicate potential wind exposure. “Any light coming in means wind chill could be getting through,” he explained.
According to Davis, the average cost for repairing a frozen pipe in Richmond is $320 for the first break, with additional breaks costing $180 each. To prevent such expenses, he recommended several preventive measures, including closing crawl space vents and checking for gaps in siding.
“Small gaps can cause big problems,” Davis warned. “If you find any gaps around hose bibs or pipes, make sure to seal them with caulking.” He also suggested opening kitchen cabinets to allow warm air to circulate around pipes.
While many residents rely on the traditional method of letting faucets drip, Davis stressed that comprehensive home inspections and maintenance are equally important. “These precautions can save homeowners hundreds of dollars in repair costs,” he said.
As winter continues, Davis urged residents to remain vigilant about their plumbing systems. “It’s not just about the temperature on the thermometer,” he said. “The wind chill factor is what really causes pipes to freeze.”
