Volkswagen Vehicle Recall Safety Issue

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Volkswagen is recalling 60,490 vehicles in the United States due to a defect that may fail to display the gear position, potentially leading to rollaways if the parking brake is not engaged, according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Saturday.

The recall affects specific models from the 2021 to 2023 production years, including the ID.4, Audi Q4 e-Tron, and Q4 e-Tron Sportback. The defect increases the risk of crashes, as drivers may unknowingly exit the vehicle without properly securing it.

The NHTSA report highlighted that the issue could impact drivers and passengers alike by causing unexpected movement of the vehicle. “It is critical that the gear position indicator functions correctly to prevent rollaway incidents,” said a spokesperson for the NHTSA. “This recall is a precautionary measure to ensure drivers are informed about their vehicle’s status before exiting.”

Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by mail starting March 29, 2025, with instructions on how to arrange repairs at authorized Volkswagen dealerships. The repair will address the gear position display malfunction at no cost to the vehicle owners.

Volkswagen reassured customers that safety remains a priority and urged those affected by the recall to act promptly. “We are committed to resolving this issue swiftly for our customers,” a representative from Volkswagen stated. “Their safety is our utmost concern.”

The NHTSA continuously monitors vehicle safety issues and encourages consumers to report any concerns regarding their vehicles. In addition, the agency stresses the importance of maintaining proper vehicle control, which includes ensuring that parking brakes are engaged when in stationary positions.
