Wahlberg Discusses Bond with Moynahan at ‘Boston Blue’ Screening
NEW YORK CITY — Mark Wahlberg opened up about his long-standing bond with Bridget Moynahan during a special screening of their new series, “Boston Blue,” on October 14.
The screening took place in New York City ahead of the show’s premiere on CBS on October 17. Wahlberg, 56, and Moynahan, 54, played siblings in the successful series “Blue Bloods,” which aired from 2010 to 2024.
During a Q&A session with co-star Sonequa Martin-Green, Wahlberg recalled how he convinced Moynahan to take on her role as ADA Erin Reagan in “Blue Bloods.” “As I read ‘Blue Bloods’, I got offered the part of Danny Reagan and I couldn’t imagine anyone in the world playing my sister besides her,” Wahlberg said. “When I called her to ask her to do it, she said, ‘I already passed on that job.’”
Wahlberg insisted, “Well, come back. It’s gonna be with me now,” and eventually, she accepted the role. The actor also credited Moynahan as “one of the unsung heroes” of “Boston Blue,” which follows Danny Reagan as he relocates to Boston.
“When I was deciding to do the show, I called her and she was so sisterly in the conversation,” he added. “It wasn’t like, ‘Oh wow,’ or, ‘Oh, what about me?’” Instead, she offered thoughtful advice without ego, aiming to help him make the best decision.
Moynahan’s involvement in the new series doesn’t stop at supporting Wahlberg; she also directed one of the episodes. She has expressed that “Boston Blue” represents a deeper farewell not just to the characters, but to the family built over 14 years on set.
Wahlberg recalled Moynahan’s drive to direct stating, “Do you think there’s anything that she can’t do?” He complimented her talent, saying, “She just stepped right in and is so good.”
The premiere episode of “Boston Blue” showcases Danny’s transition to Boston, where he investigates a deadly fire linked to a tech company. The show features new dynamics, including Danny’s relationship with his son, Sean, who also becomes a police officer.
As Wahlberg noted, “It’s not only Danny with a new partner. It’s Danny being a dad and worrying about his son.”
