Wander Franco’s Sexual Abuse Trial Begins in Dominican Republic

PUERTO PLATA, Dominican Republic (AP) — Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco began his sexual abuse trial on Monday, facing serious allegations involving a minor.
Franco, 24, has been charged with sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl and accused of exploiting her and her mother for financial gain. Prosecutors allege that Franco attempted to pay off the victim’s mother to silence her.
During the opening statements of the trial, Franco maintained his innocence, stating, “I heard everything they said, but the only thing I’m going to say is I hope justice is done.” He thanked the judges, expressing his desire for a fair trial.
Prosecutors have claimed that Franco kidnapped the girl and manipulated her mother into receiving money to keep quiet. The mother faces charges of money laundering and is currently under house arrest.
Franco’s defense team argued that the prosecution lacks substantial evidence to validate their accusations, asserting that the claims are flawed. They highlighted that the girl allegedly denied any sexual relationship with Franco.
Prosecutor Claudio Cordero countered that the evidence is lawful and sufficient for a conviction. He noted that Franco’s alleged payments to the girl and her mother amounted to thousands of dollars, with cash found during police raids confirming transactions tied to Franco.
The trial is set to proceed with witness testimony, and it could take up to eight months to reach a verdict. Unlike in the United States, this trial is being overseen by a panel of three judges, with no jury present.
Franco last played for the Rays on August 12, 2023, shortly before the accusations against him escalated. He had been enjoying an All-Star season prior to the allegations and now faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
As the proceedings continue, Franco remains adamant about clearing his name, saying, “Let justice be done.” The case has garnered significant attention, both for its serious charges and the implications for Franco’s professional career.
