Washington Nationals Hire Youngest Manager in MLB History
Washington, D.C. — The Washington Nationals have officially named Blake Butera as their new manager, making him the youngest manager in Major League Baseball history at just 33 years old.
Butera’s hiring, confirmed on October 30, 2025, comes as the Nationals aim to reshape their image following a dismal season where they finished with a 66-96 record. The move signals a commitment to youth and player development within the organization.
Before his promotion, Butera served as the senior director of player development for the Tampa Bay Rays, where he gained a reputation for fostering young talent. Under his leadership, the minor league teams he managed achieved an impressive 258-144 record with multiple championships.
“I’m excited about this opportunity,” Butera said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to working with our young players to bring success back to Nationals Park.”
Butera’s journey in baseball began at Boston College, where he played college baseball before being drafted by the Rays in the 35th round of the 2015 MLB Draft. He transitioned to coaching after a short playing career, quickly making a name for himself within the Rays’ minor league system.
New president of baseball operations Paul Toboni recruited Butera in hopes of revitalizing the team, which has struggled since its last World Series win in 2019. The Nationals will now look to integrate Butera’s analytical approach and fresh perspective as they navigate a challenging National League East.
As he assumes his role, Butera is expected to build credibility with a young roster that includes emerging stars like James Wood and C.J. Abrams. Moving forward, he will be tasked with raising the team’s competitiveness in future seasons.
On a personal note, Butera welcomed his first child, Blair Margaux Butera, on October 30, coinciding with his managerial announcement, making it a significant day for the new skipper.
