Water Conservation Urged in Tampa Due to Hurricane Impact
Officials in Tampa, Florida have issued a call for residents to conserve water following significant rainfall and winds brought by a hurricane that struck the region. Hillsborough County authorities are closely monitoring the water and wastewater systems amidst ongoing disruptions.
The hurricane, which made landfall near Siesta Key as a Category 3 storm, caused heavy rain and wind to lash Hillsborough County for several hours from late Wednesday into early Thursday.
Although Hillsborough County’s drinking water system remains operational, regional water pumping has been affected, prompting Water Resources to advise residents to use water solely for drinking and sanitation purposes. This measure is intended to prevent sewer overflows and potential backups into homes.
In St. Petersburg, Florida, the city is dealing with a significant water main break that has necessitated a citywide shutdown of potable water service. The city announced the shutdown would commence at midnight on October 9 and residents and businesses should prepare accordingly.
The water main break has already caused low water pressure and service interruptions. A boil water notice has been issued for all potable water used for drinking, cooking, and brushing teeth. This advisory will remain in effect until repairs are completed, and water safety is confirmed through further testing.
