D.c. Weather Rain Storms Forecast

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A wave of rain and possible storms is expected to hit the D.C. area Thursday evening, prompting residents to prepare for a wet commute. Meteorologists predict that after a sunny start, rain will begin late Thursday afternoon and continue into the night.

7News First Alert Meteorologist Mark Peña warns that the storm system may bring damaging winds and small hail. “If you are heading out for your dinner plans, make sure that you are grabbing the rain gear,” Peña said. The severe weather threat is anticipated to last until around 10 p.m.

Earlier Thursday, the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for part of Stafford and King George counties in Virginia, where winds gusted up to 60 mph, and quarter-sized hail fell.

As temperatures drop into the 50s and lower 60s overnight, light rain will likely continue, although storms are expected to taper off. This trend will continue into Friday, with many areas experiencing widespread showers throughout the day.

“Your Friday, again, keep the rain gear handy,” Peña advised. Although the severe weather threat diminishes, persistent showers are expected.

Looking ahead to the weekend, chances for rain will decrease significantly by Friday sunset. Saturday is forecasted to be partly to mostly sunny with highs reaching around 75 degrees. Mother’s Day on Sunday promises similar weather with cool morning temperatures and highs in the low 80s.
