The Western Cape of South Africa continues to face weather warnings as the new moon Spring tide reaches its peak, encompassing disruptive rainfall and damaging coastal and interior winds. The City of Cape Town‘s Disaster Risk Management Centre, represented by spokesperson Charlotte Powell, issues caution regarding the potential impacts, which include flooding, falling debris, and power interruptions.

Reports of wind damage and mudslides overnight in the area are currently under investigation. Powell advises the public to take heed of the warnings and suggests various precautionary measures individuals can take to reduce risks to their properties, such as clearing drainage systems, securing loose items, and diverting water flow away from structures.

As the new moon Spring tide affects the Western Cape coastline, the National Sea Rescue Institute urges bathers, boaters, paddlers, and anglers to exercise caution. The Institute’s spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, emphasizes the potential hazards posed by the strong rip currents during Spring tide periods, particularly during the final weekend of the school holidays.

Lambinon highlights the natural rough sea conditions during winter, exacerbated by the new moon Spring tide, making the coast more treacherous than usual. Coastal water users are urged to remain vigilant during this period and be aware of the increased risks associated with the Spring tide, especially over the upcoming weekend.
