Greenville County Wildfire Smoke And Fire Crews

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Wildfires are rapidly spreading across the Carolinas, prompting evacuations and concerns for local communities as firefighters battle to contain the blazes. The situation escalated over the weekend, with officials reporting multiple active fires, including the Table Rock State Park wildfire in Pickens County and the Persimmon Ridge fire in Greenville County.

The Table Rock fire, first reported on March 21, has grown to over 300 acres with no containment as of Sunday morning. Over 90 resource officers are engaged in fighting the flames, with more personnel being deployed as conditions worsen. “We’re planning a large-scale burnout operation today to create a firebreak,” said a spokesperson from the South Carolina Forestry Commission.

Roughly 100 homes in the vicinity are under a voluntary evacuation order, with officials closely monitoring an additional 500 homes in the area. Pickens County Sheriff Tommy Blankenship urged the public to keep traffic moving on Highway 11 to ensure access for emergency responders. “No one should park alongside the road, as first responders need to be able to access the burned areas quickly,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Persimmon Ridge fire has affected approximately 200 acres, igniting between Caesars Head State Park and Jones Gap State Park. The fire was reported early Sunday, and local agencies are collaborating with the South Carolina Forestry Commission to manage the situation. An evacuation order is not currently in place for affected communities, but residents have been advised to remain vigilant.

Governor Henry McMaster has declared a state of emergency due to the escalating fire activity and the ongoing statewide burn ban that prohibits outdoor burning, including campfires and recreational fires. This ban aims to prevent further ignitions during this critical period.

The fire at Table Rock State Park was reportedly sparked by negligent actions of four teenage hikers, leading to potential charges as investigations continue. Residents in the area expressed concern over the fires, noting the loss of a beloved family destination. One local described it as “heartbreaking” to see the flames threatening familiar grounds.

As firefighters work tirelessly to combat the blazes, the public is encouraged to avoid high-risk areas and support first responders. The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office has provided a list of needed supplies for relief efforts, including bottled water, snacks, and safety gear, which can be donated at various locations.

In addition to aerial support utilized at Table Rock, the South Carolina National Guard deployed a Black Hawk helicopter to assist with firefighting efforts. Local officials stress the importance of situational awareness and will continue to provide updates as conditions change. Motorists and residents with respiratory issues are advised to stay indoors due to increased smoke in the area caused by burning operations.

As the fires persist, authorities remain committed to protecting lives and property across the region. More information will be available as firefighting operations evolve throughout the day.
