Oklahoma Wildfires Evacuation March 2025

LEEDY, Okla. – Wildfires are wreaking havoc across northwestern Oklahoma, prompting evacuation orders and leaving tens of thousands without power. Chief Meteorologist David Payne is closely monitoring the situation as Leedey faces a recommended evacuation due to imminent fire threats, according to Dewey County Emergency Management.

The National Weather Service in Norman issued a Fire Warning, acting on a request from Oklahoma Forestry Services, for eastern Roger Mills and southwestern Dewey Counties. These measures are in place as strong winds exacerbate the wildfire risks across the region.

As of 1:30 PM on Friday, March 14, over 40,000 customers in Oklahoma were reported to be without power. Specifically, 11,865 Oklahoma Gas & Electric customers are affected, alongside 5,668 Public Service Company of Oklahoma customers and 3,890 Oklahoma Electric Cooperative customers.

“With gusts reaching up to 70 miles per hour, the fire danger remains critically high,” noted Payne during his midday broadcast. “It’s essential that residents heed evacuation orders and stay informed.”

In Canadian County, Storm Tracker Jeromy Carter is tracking smoke in El Reno. Authorities are advising those in affected areas to remain indoors as smoke and fire hazards persist.

Meanwhile, transportation is severely affected, with all lanes of US-412 closed between Enid and State Highway 74 in Garfield County due to blowing dust creating low visibility. Additionally, all lanes of State Highway 51 have been closed between Hennessy and State Highway 74 in Kingfisher County. Drivers are urged to avoid these routes and seek alternative paths.

Authorities are actively monitoring the wildfires and power outages throughout the state and will provide updates as they become available. Meanwhile, communities and emergency services are working diligently to manage the situation and safeguard residents.

In unrelated news, the Kentucky Wildcats advanced in the Southeastern Conference Tournament after narrowly defeating Oklahoma 85-84. Oklahoma’s Jeremiah Fears led in scoring with 28 points but could not secure the win, leaving the team with a 1-1 record in their SEC Tournament debut.
