WILLIAMS LAKE, BC – A wildfire in the verdant river valley of Williams Lake has prompted local authorities to declare a State of Local Emergency (SOLE) on the evening of July 21, 2024. The blazes ignited earlier that day, quickly escalating in intensity and putting nearby areas on high alert.

At approximately 6:15 pm, fire crews were dispatched to tackle the rapidly spreading fire, which was fueled by the dry conditions and strong winds. The fire spread to Mackenzie Avenue, putting local businesses at risk

In response to the escalating situation, the city activated its Emergency Operations Centre at Level 3 as they announced an evacuation alert for those residing along Mackenzie Avenue. The alert area has since expanded, now encompassing the west side of Williams Lake, particularly affecting residents living on Country Club Boulevard, Fairview Drive, around Tolko’s Lakeview Mill, Woodland Drive, and Westridge Drive.

The local government is collaborating with the BC Wildfire Service, which has mobilized air support alongside ground crews. Firefighters responded with air tankers and helicopters striving to contain the fire as it began to diminish in light near dusk.

Many residents observed thick smoke containing notable black plumes overshadowing the town, a visible indicator of the fire’s ferocity. As of the latest updates, the city has not released information regarding the extent of damage or the number of structures affected.

The Williams Lake Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have cordoned off Mackenzie Avenue and surrounding areas, urging residents to stay clear of the impacted zones. Officers have blocked access to Mackenzie Avenue from Highway 20 to ensure public safety.

Throughout the night, wildland crews plan to address various hotspots in the Williams Lake River Valley, working diligently to extinguish residual flames. The declaration of a local emergency empowers the city to execute necessary measures aimed at protecting public health, safety, and property from the advancing fire.

Officials have clarified that these emergency procedures also entail working closely with other emergency services, including the RCMP and the BC Wildfire Service, ensuring a coordinated effort to manage the situation effectively.

The city has urged residents under evacuation orders to proceed to the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex, which is facilitating Emergency Support Services for those affected. The community is advised to heed directives from the RCMP, emphasizing public safety.

Williams Lake is facing one of its most challenging wildfire crises to date, and as the situation develops, residents are encouraged to stay connected with local news for real-time updates. Authorities are committed to ensuring the well-being of the community as they mobilize all available resources to combat the rising flames and assist those in need.
