Winter Storm Brings Lake-Effect Snow to Chicago Area
CHICAGO (WLS) — A winter storm sweeping across the United States is bringing lake-effect snow and freezing drizzle to the Chicago area, creating hazardous travel conditions. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Cook, DuPage, and Lake counties in Illinois, as well as Kenosha and Racine counties in Wisconsin, until 4 p.m. Monday.
ABC7 Accuweather Meteorologist Tracy Butler reported that a band of lake-effect snow developed early Monday morning, with significant wind gusts exceeding 30 miles per hour and freezing drizzle adding to the slick conditions. The heaviest snow accumulations are expected near Lake Michigan, with up to three inches possible in Chicago, parts of Will and Kankakee counties in Illinois, and Lake, Porter, and Newton counties in Indiana.
Areas west of Chicago are expected to see little to no snow accumulation due to the wind direction. Meanwhile, temperatures remain below normal, with highs in the mid-20s on Sunday and a brief dip into the low-20s midweek before a slow warming trend returns temperatures to seasonal averages by the weekend.
The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for central and southern Illinois, as well as central and southern Indiana, where 6 to 12 inches of snow are possible. Ice accumulations in southern Illinois and Indiana could lead to prolonged traffic disruptions, prompting Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb to activate the state’s National Guard for emergency response assistance.
Forecasters with the NBC 5 Storm Team are also monitoring another potential snow event later in the week, with several inches of snow possible across the Chicago area on Friday and Saturday. Residents are advised to stay updated on the latest forecasts and prepare for challenging travel conditions.
