NEW YORK, N.Y. — A powerful winter storm swept through the New York City area Saturday night, bringing a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain that turned roads into treacherous ice rinks and prompted travel advisories across the region. The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings and advisories for parts of the Tri-State Area, with snowfall projections ranging from 2-4 inches in the city to up to 8 inches in northern areas.

The storm, which began as snow before transitioning to sleet and freezing rain, created hazardous conditions for both drivers and pedestrians. Officials urged residents to exercise extreme caution, especially as temperatures plummeted overnight. New York City Mayor Eric Adams assured residents that city agencies were prepared to handle the storm, saying, ‘Our city agencies are ready to answer the call and keep New Yorkers safe as we expect freezing temperatures and snowfall this weekend.’

The Department of Sanitation issued a Snow Alert, deploying over 700 salt spreaders and 700 million pounds of salt to combat the icy conditions. Thousands of sanitation workers were placed on 12-hour shifts to ensure roads remained passable. The city also suspended Alternate Side Parking regulations to facilitate snow removal efforts.

Looking ahead, another winter storm system is expected to impact the region by midweek, potentially bringing additional snow and wintry mix. Meteorologists caution that the active storm track could lead to multiple rounds of winter weather throughout the next week, with the potential for significant snowfall in some areas.

‘Uncertainty remains with the storm track and timing, which will play a critical role in where the heaviest snowfall occurs,’ the NOAA NWS Weather Prediction Center noted in a recent update. Residents are advised to stay informed and plan ahead, especially with the Super Bowl weekend approaching and another storm system on the horizon.

For now, the region braces for another round of winter weather, with officials and residents alike preparing for what could be a messy and icy start to the week.
