Winter Storm Causes School Closures in North Carolina, Virginia
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A winter storm sweeping through the Southeast has forced multiple school districts in North Carolina and Virginia to close or delay classes on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2025. The storm, which brought snow and icy road conditions, has disrupted daily routines for thousands of students and families.
In North Carolina, Surry County Schools announced a three-hour delay, while Alleghany County Schools in Virginia opted for a full closure with an optional teacher workday. Other affected districts include Carroll County, Galax City, and Grayson County in Virginia, all of which closed schools entirely. Danville City Schools implemented a two-hour delay to allow for safer travel conditions.
Local officials cited hazardous road conditions as the primary reason for the closures. “The safety of our students and staff is our top priority,” said a spokesperson for Grayson County Schools. “We encourage everyone to stay off the roads if possible.”
The National Weather Service issued winter weather advisories for the region, warning of icy patches and reduced visibility. Meteorologists predict temperatures will remain below freezing, prolonging the impact of the storm.
Parents and guardians are advised to check their local school district websites for updates on potential further delays or closures. Many districts are also offering remote learning options to minimize disruptions to the academic calendar.
