Winter Storm Cora Snow North Carolina

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Winter Storm Cora has brought significant snowfall and icy conditions to North and South Carolina, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Winter Storm Warning until noon Saturday for counties along the TennesseeNorth Carolina state line. The storm has created hazardous road conditions, with freezing temperatures expected to persist throughout the day.

According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation‘s TIMS Alert system, primary roads in Jackson, Swain, Polk, and Macon counties are covered with snow and ice. Asheville Regional Airport recorded nearly 2 inches of snow, while Jackson County reported 3.5 inches. The cold conditions are expected to continue, with some areas struggling to reach above-freezing temperatures on Saturday.

“Dangerous travel conditions are expected, especially on untreated roads,” said Kelly Doty, a meteorologist with WLOS. “Black ice and slippery roads will remain a concern throughout the mountains.”

The storm has also impacted other parts of the Carolinas, including Greenville, Columbia, Charlotte, and Raleigh. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and to take precautions when venturing outside. The National Weather Service has urged drivers to be cautious and to allow extra time for travel.

As Winter Storm Cora moves east, meteorologists are monitoring the potential for additional snowfall and ice accumulation. The storm is expected to weaken as it progresses, but the lingering effects of freezing temperatures will continue to pose challenges for residents and road crews alike.
