Snow Covered Streets In Massachusetts Winter Storm

BOSTON — Winter Storm Demi swept through Massachusetts on Monday, January 20, 2025, dumping several inches of snow across the state and leaving frigid temperatures in its wake. The fast-moving storm brought widespread snowfall totals of 5 to 8 inches, according to StormTeam 5, with some areas reporting up to 6 inches.

The National Weather Service (NWS) recorded significant snowfall across multiple counties. In Worcester County, Holden reported 6 inches, while Leominster and Paxton saw 5 inches and 4.8 inches, respectively. Boston received 4.5 inches, and Greenfield in Franklin County recorded 5 inches. Other notable totals included 4.2 inches in Norton and 3.3 inches in Chelsea.

“This storm moved quickly but packed a punch,” said a spokesperson for the NWS. “Residents should prepare for dangerously cold temperatures following the snowfall.”

StormTeam 5 warned that the aftermath of Winter Storm Demi would bring plummeting temperatures, with wind chills expected to drop below zero in some areas. The combination of snow and extreme cold has prompted local officials to urge caution on roads and sidewalks.

Massachusetts Department of Transportation crews worked overnight to clear major roadways, but secondary roads and residential areas remained snow-covered. “We’re asking everyone to stay off the roads if possible and to give our plows room to work,” said a department spokesperson.

Schools across the state announced closures or delays, and public transportation services reported minor disruptions. Boston Logan International Airport experienced flight cancellations and delays due to the weather.

Residents in affected areas shared mixed reactions. “It’s beautiful to look at, but shoveling is no joke,” said John Miller, a Boston resident. “I’m just glad we’re prepared with supplies.”

As the storm moves out, meteorologists are tracking another potential system that could bring additional snow later in the week. Officials are urging residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions as winter weather continues to impact the region.
