Winter Storm Dumps Up to 8 Inches of Snow Across Memphis and Mid-South
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A winter storm blanketed Memphis and the Mid-South with several inches of snow on Friday, January 10, causing widespread disruptions and picturesque winter scenes. The storm brought a mix of sleet, snow, and rain to parts of North Mississippi, but most areas experienced significant snowfall.
According to the National Weather Service, the Memphis International Airport recorded an official total of 7.5 inches of snow, while Helena-West Helena, Arkansas, saw the highest accumulation in the region at 8.3 inches. Across the Mid-South, snow totals ranged from 3 to 8 inches, with many communities reporting heavy snowfall and icy conditions.
“This storm was a significant event for our area, especially considering the variability in precipitation types,” said a local meteorologist. “The snow totals were higher than initially forecasted, particularly in northern Arkansas and parts of West Tennessee.”
Residents shared their experiences on social media, posting photos of snow-covered streets and backyards. Many schools and businesses closed early, and local authorities urged caution on the roads. “We’ve been out since early morning clearing major roadways, but side streets are still hazardous,” said a spokesperson for the Memphis Public Works Department.
The storm also impacted travel, with numerous flight delays and cancellations at Memphis International Airport. Drivers were advised to stay off the roads unless necessary, as icy conditions persisted into the evening.
For the latest updates on weather conditions, residents were encouraged to monitor local forecasts and download weather apps for real-time alerts. The storm marked one of the most significant winter weather events in the region this season, with more snow possible in the coming weeks as colder temperatures settle in.
