Winter Storm Forces Mass Road Closures Across Louisiana
NEW ORLEANS — A severe winter storm has prompted widespread road closures across Louisiana, with officials urging residents to avoid travel due to hazardous conditions. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LADOTD) and local law enforcement have shut down multiple highways, interstates, and bridges as freezing temperatures and icy roads create dangerous driving conditions.
Key closures include Interstate 10, Interstate 310, the Huey P. Long Bridge, and the Crescent City Connection Bridge, all of which are closed until further notice. Elevated sections of I-55 in St. John the Baptist Parish and Tangipahoa Parish are also shut down due to icy conditions. “Motorists are strongly encouraged to shelter in place. If driving is absolutely necessary, please exercise extreme caution,” officials said in a statement.
In Orleans Parish, LA 407 (Woodland Highway) and US 90B are among the affected routes. The Causeway Bridge, Twin Span Bridge, and Highway 11 Bridge are also closed in both directions. The LADOTD emphasized that drivers should not attempt to circumvent barricades, as doing so endangers both themselves and first responders.
Other closures include LA 308 in Lafourche Parish, LA 23 Bridge (Empire Bridge), and US 90 between Amelia and Des Allemands. The Bonnet Carre Spillway and LA 1 in Lafourche Parish are also shut down. The DOTD warned that non-priority routes may close as conditions worsen.
Residents are advised to monitor updates via the LADOTD website, social media channels, or by calling 511. Out-of-state travelers can access information by dialing 1-800-ROAD-511 (1-800-762-3511).
