Winter Storm Hits Southern U.S., Bringing Snow and Frigid Temperatures
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – A significant winter storm is set to impact the southern United States this week, bringing heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures to regions unaccustomed to such conditions. The storm, expected to arrive on Friday, will blanket areas from northern Texas to Georgia with 3 to 5 inches of snow, potentially causing hazardous travel conditions and power outages.
Brandon Thorne, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Shreveport, La., warned that the storm could disrupt daily life for several days. “Things shut down for multiple days if there’s any kind of ice on the road,” Thorne said. “It becomes more of a hazard because we’re just not built for that kind of stuff.”
In contrast, New Englanders, who are more familiar with harsh winter weather, shared tips on how to stay safe and warm. Shane Beattie, the emergency management director for Lancaster, N.H., emphasized the importance of layering clothing. “It’s all about layers,” Beattie said, recommending wool socks, hats, and mittens for staying warm.
Mike Carmon, who works at the Mount Washington Observatory, highlighted the necessity of proper gear when dealing with extreme cold. “It kind of gives you all the protection you need from all the different hazards that you’ll find in the cold and snow,” Carmon said, describing his three-part layering system.
Vanessa Palange, community outreach coordinator for New Hampshire‘s Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, advised residents to prepare for potential power outages by stocking up on essentials like flashlights, batteries, and non-perishable food. “You’re safest at home during a storm,” Palange said.
For those who must venture out, James Langdon, who manages roads and snow plowing for Jackson, N.H., cautioned against driving in snowy conditions. “If you’re not used to driving in snow, don’t,” Langdon said. “If you get stranded, you become a road hazard.”
As the storm approaches, officials urge residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this unusual winter event.
