DETROIT, Mich. — A major winter storm is set to sweep across Southeast Michigan, bringing significant snow accumulations this weekend. Following a brief respite from snowfall, meteorologists are predicting a mix of snow and freezing rain starting Saturday and lasting into early next week.
The storm is expected to begin affecting the region early Saturday morning, with a Winter Weather Advisory in place until 7 p.m. Snow showers began to blanket parts of the region overnight, and many residents awoke to a light coating of snow. The forecast predicts additional snow throughout Saturday, potentially transitioning to a wintry mix as temperatures rise slightly above freezing.
“We’re looking at the possibility of 2 to 3 inches of snow accumulating today,” said Bryan, a meteorologist from the 4Warn Weather Team. “However, as temperatures rise, we expect some areas south of I-96 to experience a mix with rain, which could result in light ice accumulation.”
Later Saturday night, temperatures are forecast to dip below freezing again, leading to a change back to snow. The most significant snow accumulations, possibly exceeding 6 inches, are anticipated Sunday as the area of low pressure moves into the Ohio Valley.
“By late Sunday night, we expect snow to taper off, but some flurries may continue into early Monday morning,” Bryan added. “Wind gusts of 30 to 35 mph are expected Sunday afternoon, which could create hazardous visibility conditions.”
According to the National Weather Service, regions north of I-96 are likely to see up to 10 inches of snow from this storm, while southern zones should prepare for 4 to 6 inches, with possible ice accumulation due to a wintry mix.
Temperatures will plummet ahead of another cold front early next week, with highs only reaching the teens on Monday and wind chill values potentially dropping to well below zero. Snow showers are expected to persist through most of next week as the region braces for arctic air.
“If you plan to travel this weekend, be prepared for slick and slippery roads,” Bryan warned. “Ensure you have your winter gear with you in case of emergencies.”
Detroit and surrounding areas are no strangers to winter weather, but this storm marks one of the season’s most significant events yet. Residents are encouraged to stay updated on weather alerts and conditions through local news channels and weather apps.
