Winter Storm Threat Prompts School Closures Across North Georgia
ATLANTA, Ga. — School districts across metro Atlanta and north Georgia are preparing for a winter storm expected to bring snow, sleet, and freezing rain starting Friday morning. Many schools have announced closures or transitions to virtual learning as officials monitor the potential for hazardous conditions.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for much of north Georgia, effective from 7 a.m. Friday through Saturday. The FOX 5 Storm Team and 11Alive Weather Impact Team are forecasting a mix of precipitation, including snow and ice, which could lead to dangerous travel conditions and power outages.
“There is a strong chance of snow across North Georgia on Friday morning, with some areas also seeing ice,” said FOX 5 meteorologists. The storm is expected to peak during the morning commute, prompting concerns about road safety and school operations.
At least 57 school systems, including those in far north Georgia’s mountain counties and metro Atlanta, are evaluating the forecast. Districts such as Cobb County, Gwinnett County, and Fulton County are among those considering closures or early dismissals. Residents are advised to check local announcements for updates.
Hazardous travel conditions are likely, particularly on untreated roads. The FOX 5 Storm Team has declared Friday and Saturday as Storm Alert Days, urging residents to stay informed and prepare for potential disruptions. The National Weather Service warns that freezing rain could increase the risk of power outages in some areas.
As the storm approaches, officials are encouraging residents to monitor updates and take precautions. “Be sure to check back here for the latest announcements,” said 11Alive, which is actively tracking school closures and delays across the region.
