Winter Storm Southeast Snow Accumulation 2025

COLUMBIA, S.C. – A winter storm is expected to bring snow and freezing temperatures to the Southeast, with the Midlands and Lowcountry regions of South Carolina bracing for potential impacts starting Tuesday afternoon. Forecasters warn of hazardous travel conditions and possible school closures as the storm develops.

According to long-range weather models, the storm could bring accumulating snowfall, particularly along and south of the Interstate 20 corridor. Meteorologists caution that the exact snowfall totals remain uncertain, but any precipitation is likely to freeze overnight, creating icy roads and dangerous travel conditions from Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

“Confidence is growing that winter weather will affect the area on Tuesday and Wednesday,” said Live 5 First Alert Meteorologist Bill Walsh. He added that a second wave of wintry precipitation could follow on Thursday.

An arctic blast preceding the storm will plunge temperatures into the teens and 20s, with wind chills making conditions feel even colder. Highs are expected to remain in the 30s for several days, prompting warnings to protect pipes, pets, and people from the extreme cold.

Lowcountry school districts are monitoring the storm’s track and have yet to decide whether to hold classes or switch to eLearning. Decisions are expected in the coming days as the storm’s path becomes clearer.

Meteorologists emphasize that small shifts in the storm’s track could significantly alter outcomes. “A deviation of 30 to 50 miles could mean the difference between a messy mix and an all-snow accumulating event,” Walsh explained. The storm could bring snow, ice, sleet, or a combination, depending on atmospheric conditions.

Residents are urged to stay updated on the forecast and prepare for potential disruptions. “Regardless, travel will be impacted,” said Chris Holtzman, a meteorologist with WIS, in a social media update.
