Winter Storm Triggers School Closures Across Massachusetts and New Hampshire
BOSTON, Mass. — A winter storm is set to impact parts of Massachusetts Wednesday night, prompting numerous school closures and delays for Thursday, February 13. The storm is expected to deliver up to 3 inches of snow before transitioning into a wintry mix and rain.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for all of Western, Central, and parts of Eastern Massachusetts, effective from 10 p.m. Wednesday until 10 a.m. Thursday. By midnight Thursday, forecasters predict a 100% probability of snow in cities like Boston, Gloucester, and Lowell, while areas including Worcester and Springfield are expected to experience a wintry mix.
“The initial snowfall will be followed by a mix of sleet and freezing rain,” said a meteorologist from StormTeam 5. “This could make travel conditions slippery for the morning commute.”
As schools prepare for the storm, several districts have announced delays and closures. Worcester Public Schools plans to begin Thursday on a two-hour delay. The full list of affected school districts is continuously being updated as new announcements are made.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation advises residents to use caution while traveling. The forecast projects total accumulation of 1 to 3 inches statewide, with less anticipated on Cape Cod. However, inland regions and higher elevations are predicted to retain snow longer due to lower temperatures.
Some of the districts that have announced delays include Marlborough, Auburn, Lawrence, and the Quaboag Regional School District. Meanwhile, towns like Southbridge and Tantasqua Regional are also implementing similar delays.
“We want to ensure the safety of our students and staff, which is why these precautions are necessary,” said a spokesperson from the Worcester Public Schools.
Residents are encouraged to stay updated on weather alerts and school status through local news channels as conditions evolve.
