Winter Storm Warning Issued for Southern Utah
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for parts of Southern Utah, which came into effect on Wednesday evening and will continue through to noon on Saturday, October 19, 2024. The areas affected by this warning include the central and southern mountains, as well as Joes Valley, Cove Fort, Fish Lake, Alton, and Brian Head.
Motorists in these regions should be prepared for heavy snowfall. According to the weather service, total snow accumulations are anticipated to reach between 8 to 16 inches, with specific areas such as the Tushar Range, Boulder Mountain area, and near Brian Head potentially experiencing up to 22 inches of new snow. Winter driving conditions are expected on all mountain routes, including higher passes along Interstate 15 and Interstate 70. Snow rates could exceed 1 to 2 inches per hour following a strong cold front from late Thursday night through early Friday morning.
While St. George is not expected to receive any snow, a combination of rain and thunderstorms is forecasted for Thursday night, extending through to 3 a.m. on Friday. Post this period, rain is likely to persist, with the possibility of precipitation assessed at 90%. Temperatures in St. George will see a low of around 53 degrees Fahrenheit.
Rain is expected to continue into Friday morning for St. George, with a forecasted high of 60 degrees accompanied by winds ranging from 13 to 20 mph. By Friday night, the chance of precipitation is expected to decrease to 20%, while wind gusts may reach up to 31 mph.
