Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Central North Carolina
RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for central North Carolina, including Alamance, Orange, and Durham counties, as freezing temperatures and a chance of rain sweep through the region. The advisory, in effect through Monday morning, warns of potential icy conditions and light freezing rain, particularly along the Virginia border.
According to ABC11 meteorologists, the Triangle area could see rainfall totals of 0.25 to 0.50 inches, with northern counties experiencing up to 0.10 inches of ice and a few inches of snow. Temperatures will vary widely across the state, ranging from the mid-30s near the Virginia border to near 60 degrees in the Sandhills.
NCDOT officials have begun treating roads with brine to mitigate hazardous conditions. The cold blast is expected to persist through the week, with feels-like temperatures dropping into the low 30s by Friday afternoon. A wintry mix is forecasted for Friday night into Saturday morning, raising concerns about additional travel disruptions.
Schools across the region have announced closures and delays in anticipation of the winter weather. Meteorologists urge caution for morning commuters, particularly on elevated surfaces like bridges and overpasses, where ice accumulation is most likely.
In the Triad area, including Surry, Stokes, and Alleghany counties, significant snowfall has already been reported, with some areas seeing more than three inches. Freezing rain remains a concern overnight, with temperatures expected to remain below freezing until late morning.
Residents are advised to stay updated on weather conditions and avoid unnecessary travel during the advisory period. Power outages are possible in the mountains, where ice accumulation on trees could exceed a quarter of an inch.
