DETROIT, Mich. — A winter weather advisory is in effect for Southeast Michigan as a significant weather system moves into the area, bringing the possibility of snow and icy conditions on the morning of Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2025.
Snow is expected to begin falling in the early afternoon hours on Wednesday, with several inches accumulating by Thursday morning. As a result, school delays and closures are likely for both days, especially in districts where travel conditions may become hazardous.
According to meteorologist Alan Longstreet, the region is currently experiencing slippery road conditions due to ice. “Nearly 600 reports of icy roads have come in, making the morning commute extremely challenging,” he noted. A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. today, he added.
Traffic incidents linked to the icy conditions have been reported across the region. Drivers are urged to exercise caution and prepare for a slick commute. As temperatures rise throughout the day, the ice may begin to melt, but gusty winds of 25-30 mph are expected to persist.
Meanwhile, similar forecasts are affecting other areas, including parts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The National Weather Service reported that snowfall in Philadelphia is already underway, with expected accumulations of 1-3 inches in the city and up to 6 inches in southern Delaware.
In preparation for the anticipated winter storm, the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning from 1 p.m. Tuesday until 7 a.m. Wednesday for several counties including Atlantic, Cape May, and Cumberland in New Jersey. A winter weather advisory is also in effect for areas in Pennsylvania, including Delaware and parts of Montgomery and Chester counties.
As schools assess the impending weather, many are opting for delayed openings or cancellations. Parents are advised to check local school district announcements for updates regarding school schedules.
