Winter Weather Advisory Spurs School Closures Across North Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for North Alabama, effective from 9 p.m. Tuesday through 9 a.m. Wednesday, amid forecasts of hazardous conditions due to a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain.
The advisory warns that travel may be difficult with anticipated minor accumulations of winter precipitation. Wednesday has been designated an Impact Day, indicating that weather conditions will disrupt normal activities.
As of Tuesday evening, the Alabama weather forecast predicts snow and ice mainly impacting areas north of Highway 278. The Advisory includes counties such as Lamar, Fayette, and Walker, which could experience a wintry mix for several hours early Wednesday morning.
“Locations like Cullman, Hamilton, and Double Springs may experience travel impacts due to slippery roads, particularly on bridges and elevated surfaces,” said Scott Martin, a meteorologist for WVTM 13. “A light glaze of ice and some snow accumulation of up to one inch is possible.”
Most of Central Alabama is expected to experience a cold rain, ensuring a wet commute, even if snow is not likely to accumulate. By lunchtime on Wednesday, temperatures are projected to rise above freezing across most regions, allowing conditions to improve.
In the lead-up to the weather shift, several school districts across the area have announced closures and delays. Institutions including Blount County Schools, Cullman City Schools, and Gadsden City Schools have opted for remote learning or delayed openings due to safety concerns. A full list of school changes includes:
– Bevill State Community College: Opening at 10 a.m.
– Blount County Schools: Remote Learning
– Boaz City Schools: Two-hour delay
– Cherokee County Schools: Two-hour delay
– Cullman City Schools: Two-hour delay
– Fayette County Schools: Closed
– Gadsden City Schools: Two-hour delay
– Haleyville City Schools: Closed
– Jasper City Schools: Two-hour delay

The National Weather Service will continue to monitor the situation and issue updates as necessary. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and consider precautions such as dripping faucets to prevent freezing pipes and bringing pets indoors during the extreme cold expected later in the week.
This is a developing story; additional reports will follow as new information emerges.
