Arizona Winter Weather Forecast Storms

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Arizona is bracing for a series of winter storms that will bring rain, snow, and gusty winds to the state this week. The most significant impact is anticipated on Thursday, with precipitation expected to affect travel and outdoor activities.

The first storm system is set to arrive Tuesday evening, bringing rain to the Valley and snow at higher elevations. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for areas above 6,000 feet from Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Precipitation is expected to begin after 5 p.m., peaking between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. on Wednesday. Rainfall totals in the Valley could range from 0.1 to 0.3 inches, while higher elevations like Flagstaff may see 1 to 3 inches of snow and areas around Snowbowl could receive 4 to 8 inches.

“With snow levels starting at about 5,500 to 6,000 feet, snowfall will accumulate significantly in the northern mountains, creating hazardous travel conditions,” said meteorologist John Smith. “Drivers should expect reduced visibility and potential road closures.”

Following the initial wave, a stronger system is expected to move in Thursday late morning through early Friday morning. This storm could drop snow levels to as low as 3,500 feet by midnight, with Flagstaff possibly receiving another 6 to 12 inches of snow, and Sunrise and Arizona Snowbowl potentially seeing up to 1.5 feet.

The afternoon and evening on Thursday will be crucial as heavy precipitation spreads across the state, with northwestern winds strengthening to gusts of 40 mph in the higher elevations and around 25 mph in the Valley. The combination of falling snow and high winds may lead to treacherous driving conditions, particularly during the evening commute.

“It’s important for residents to prepare for challenging weather conditions, especially those planning to travel during this time,” noted Smith. “Adjusting travel plans may be necessary.”

A third system may arrive Friday night into Saturday, delivering additional rain and snow showers mainly to the northern and eastern regions. Current forecasts suggest these showers will be lighter but could complicate conditions in areas still dealing with the previous storms.

As the weather continues to evolve, residents are encouraged to stay updated through local meteorological outlets or download the FOX 10 Weather app for the latest forecasts and warnings. Live radar and weather tracking are available, providing crucial information for anyone planning to venture outdoors.

Weather alerts will be in place as snow accumulations and hazardous conditions develop, and updates will be provided as new data comes in. Stay prepared, Arizona!
