Winter Weather Delays Schools Across Southeastern North Carolina

SOUTHEASTERN N.C. (WECT) — Schools throughout the Cape Fear region are adjusting their schedules in response to anticipated winter weather conditions. The changes come as forecasters predict rain and potential freezing temperatures.
Duplin County Schools announced in a press release that all schools will be closed for students and staff on Thursday, Feb. 20. Meanwhile, New Hanover County Schools informed residents via social media that students will transition to remote learning on the same day, except for Restart calendar schools, which will be closed.
“All Restart calendar schools (Snipes and Freeman) will be closed on Thursday, February 20, 2025,” the district stated. Additionally, all after-school activities in New Hanover County will be canceled for February 20.
Brunswick County Schools have also opted for remote learning on Thursday, Feb. 20, with all after-school activities canceled. Parents can expect communications regarding remote learning assignments by 9:00 a.m. that day.
Cape Fear Academy plans to implement a two-hour delay on Thursday, starting classes at 10:00 a.m. The administration will continually monitor weather updates and notify families by 8:00 a.m. if a full closure is needed.
In Columbus County, schools announced an early dismissal at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 19, while Bladen County Schools declared a full closure for the same date, emphasizing that no remote learning will take place.
Pender County Schools stated that all after-school activities will be canceled on Wednesday, Feb. 19. They will shift to a remote learning schedule for Thursday, Feb. 20, with students expected to resume regular classes on Friday.
“We understand the inconvenience this may cause and appreciate the flexibility and understanding of our families,” said Dr. Brad Breedlove, Superintendent of Pender County Schools. “The safety of our students is our top priority, and we are taking these measures out of an abundance of caution.”
Meanwhile, Whiteville City Schools will dismiss students at 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Brunswick Community College plans to open all campus locations at 2 p.m. on Thursday, also due to provisional hazardous road conditions.
Bladen Community College announced it would delay its opening until noon on Thursday, Feb. 20. Cape Fear Community College (CFCC) will have a two-hour delay for all employees and students, with remote instruction occurring from 8 to 10 a.m. before in-person classes resume at 10 a.m.
University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) has confirmed that all classes and events before 12:30 p.m. on Thursday will be canceled, with normal operations resuming at noon that day.
Southeastern Community College announced plans to close early at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19, with all events canceled.
