North Carolina Winter Storm School Closures 2025

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — Classes at several Triangle-area schools were canceled on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, due to hazardous weather conditions caused by a lingering wintry mix. The decision follows Monday’s snowfall and icy conditions, with more winter weather expected later in the week.

School districts across central and western North Carolina, including Charlotte, have implemented schedule changes, ranging from delays to full closures. Some schools have transitioned to remote learning to ensure student safety while maintaining academic continuity.

In the Charlotte area, more than a dozen districts adjusted their schedules on Monday, January 6, as snow and ice threatened the region. Up to two inches of snow were forecasted for the mountains, with a quarter-inch of ice accumulation possible. Further east, rain was the primary form of precipitation.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for several counties, including Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Caldwell, and Watauga, until Monday evening. A winter weather advisory was also in effect for parts of northwestern North Carolina.

Residents across the state are bracing for continued cold temperatures, with highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s expected throughout the week. In the mountains, temperatures may struggle to rise above the upper 20s, with morning lows dipping into the lower teens.

ABC11 and WBTV are providing continuous updates on school closures and weather conditions. Organizations can report closures or delays through ABC11’s online system, as the previous phone-based system is no longer operational.

For the latest updates, residents are encouraged to monitor local news outlets and download weather apps to stay informed about the evolving forecast.
