WisDOT Warns Residents of New DMV Phishing Scam

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – The Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is alerting residents about a new phishing scam. Scammers are sending fraudulent text messages that mimic WisDOT DMV communications in an attempt to steal personal information.
The warning comes after the DMV experienced a spike in calls and emails on Monday, June 2, from residents reporting unsolicited messages. These texts often include alarming claims such as a “final notice” or an “unpaid traffic violation,” prompting recipients to click on malicious links.
The Whitewater Police Department reported on social media that several residents fell victim to these scams, receiving notifications about supposed outstanding traffic violations. They advised anyone receiving such texts to delete them immediately and refrain from clicking any links.
Tina Braddy, Director of DMV’s Bureau of Driver Services, highlighted that this scam has recently impacted other states, including Illinois, Pennsylvania, Florida, New Jersey, Georgia, and New York. “Given the number of calls we’re getting from DMV customers, it’s likely Wisconsin is the next target,” Braddy said. “We want to protect our residents, so we are quickly issuing this alert to ensure fewer fall victim to these scams.”
The DMV has provided several tips for residents to help avoid falling prey to these scams. They encourage consumers to sign up for account activity alerts and renewal reminders through the DMV’s eNotify service. This will provide notifications of any suspicious activity on their accounts.
For those who believe they may have already fallen victim to this scam, guidance includes filing a report with local law enforcement, reporting the scam to the Federal Trade Commission, and seeking support from organizations like AARP’s Fraud Watch Helpline.
The Wisconsin DMV continues to monitor the situation and urges residents to remain vigilant against such fraudulent activities.
