LAS VEGAS — The opening game of the 2025 WNBA Finals was the most watched Game 1 since 1997. An average of 1.9 million viewers tuned in on Friday night, according to ESPN. This marked a 62% increase from the previous year’s matchup between the New York Liberty and Minnesota Lynx, which garnered 1.1 million viewers. The game peaked with 2.5 million viewers.

This year’s Finals opener featured the Las Vegas Aces defeating the Phoenix Mercury 89-86, showcasing stellar performances from WNBA MVP A'ja Wilson, who had 21 points and 10 rebounds, and Dana Evans, who also contributed 21 points off the bench. Evans excelled with her shooting, making 5-of-6 three-point attempts, including three in the crucial fourth quarter.

The game was competitive throughout and came down to the final moments. The Aces took an 89-86 lead after Jackie Young made two key free throws. However, Satou Sabally‘s attempt to tie the game with a three-pointer was unsuccessful, sealing the Aces’ victory.

Game 2 followed with another strong viewership performance, seeing the Aces secure a 91-78 win. Young led the scoring with 32 points, and Wilson recorded 28 points and 14 rebounds. This marks the first year the WNBA Finals is played as a best-of-seven series, meaning the Aces need two more wins to claim their third championship title.

Game 3 is scheduled for Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET in Phoenix. The anticipation for this game is significant, as the WNBA Finals continue to attract viewers in large numbers, showcasing the growing popularity of women’s basketball.
