Berkeley California Ada Street Car Accident Scene

BERKELEY, Calif. – A 66-year-old woman died Sunday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle and trapped underneath it near Monterey Market in North Berkeley, authorities confirmed.

The collision occurred at the intersection of Ada and California streets just before 1 p.m., according to the Berkeley Police Department. First responders found the pedestrian “barely breathing” and trapped beneath a red Chevrolet Bolt. Firefighters used a floor jack to extricate her and transported her “Code 3″—with lights and sirens—to Highland Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Benjamin Fry, a witness at the scene, reported that the driver, who remained at the scene, was traveling northbound on California Street and appeared to have struck the woman while making a left turn onto Ada Street. Police said the driver, whose identity has not been released, was not injured and impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

The Berkeley Police Department’s Fatal Accident Investigation Team is handling the case. Authorities also plan to hold a “Vision Zero Rapid Response Crash Briefing” as part of their standard protocol. The investigation is ongoing, and details may change as more information becomes available.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about pedestrian safety in Berkeley, where the city has implemented Vision Zero initiatives aimed at eliminating traffic fatalities. The crash occurred near a busy market area, leaving groceries scattered in the street and prompting community members to call for increased safety measures.
