Woman Suffers Severe Injuries After Shark Attack in Sydney Harbour
A woman in her 20s sustained severe injuries after being attacked by a shark in Sydney Harbour‘s eastern suburbs on Monday evening. NSW Ambulance received a call at around 7:45pm reporting the incident at Billyard Avenue, Elizabeth Bay. The woman was promptly pulled out of the water with serious bleeding, and her injuries were described as severe.
The local resident, who chose to remain anonymous, heard a scream from inside his home and rushed outside to find the injured woman trying to pull herself onto the wharf. He noticed blood throughout the water and on the jetty, highlighting the gravity of the situation. A nearby veterinarian applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding before the arrival of police and paramedics.
The woman was bitten on her right leg, causing severe lacerations and significant blood loss. She was transported to St Vincent's Hospital in a stable condition. Kings Cross Police Area Command provided assistance to the paramedics at the scene. The incident occurred while the victim was swimming off the private wharf, according to eyewitness reports. As a precautionary measure, Marine Area Command is patrolling the area.
This shark attack follows the previous incidents of a surfer bitten in Port Macquarie and a British expat fatally attacked while swimming at Little Bay. Furthermore, St Marys Point endured a close encounter with a shark, resulting in a large bite mark on a surfer’s board. In a separate incident off Ethel Beach on the Yorke Peninsula, a 15-year-old surfer suffered a shark attack as well.
