Yankees’ Anthony Volpe Stars in AL Wild Card Game 1

NEW YORK, NY — Anthony Volpe led the New York Yankees to a crucial victory in Game 1 of their American League wild-card series against the Toronto Blue Jays on October 4, 2023. The rookie shortstop hit a home run in his first at-bat, setting the tone for the game.
Volpe’s homer came in the second inning off Blue Jays pitcher Garrett Crochet, giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead. “It felt good to put us ahead,” Volpe said. “These are tight games, tight margins, so anytime you can get a lead or put something on the board or get something going, it feels good.”
Despite struggling earlier in the season, Volpe’s recent performances earned him the starting position. He finished the game with two hits, both against Crochet, and displayed solid defensive skills throughout.
Manager Aaron Boone praised Volpe’s resilience, stating, “He’s been through a lot this year, but he’s resilient. I trust him to keep growing, and tonight was a great example of that.”
Volpe’s experience in the postseason has been promising. In last year’s playoffs, he hit .286 with an .815 OPS, showcasing his potential. His Game 1 home run marked the second of his playoff career, the first being a grand slam during last year’s World Series.
The Yankees made adjustments to their roster ahead of the wild-card series, including adding catcher J.C. Escarra. Boone indicated this change provides flexibility for pinch-hitting and pinch-running in critical moments.
Discussing the roster shuffles, Boone said, “Just the protection. The ability to pinch run or pinch hit in a big spot… to make sure we’re covered on the catching side of things.”
With Game 2 approaching, the Yankees are hopeful that Volpe will continue to play an integral role as they aim for their 28th championship title.
