OXON HILL, Md. — A 19-year-old student was arrested Monday after he attempted to enter Potomac High School with two loaded firearms concealed in his clothing. The incident occurred around 10:45 a.m. when the school’s metal detector alerted staff to the presence of the weapons.
Jamel Curtis, a junior at Potomac High School, was detained by local authorities shortly after school security personnel reported the incident to the Prince George's County Police Department. The police were notified promptly, allowing them to intervene before any potential harm could occur.
According to police reports, Curtis was found carrying both firearms inside his clothes. He is now in custody and faces several charges, including possession of a handgun on his person and possession of a dangerous weapon on school property. No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.
In a letter to families, Principal Demarco Clark confirmed the incident and assured parents that the security measures at the school functioned effectively to maintain safety. “The safety of our students is our top priority,” Clark stated, emphasizing the importance of discussing acceptable behaviors regarding weapons at school.
Dr. Clark’s letter also reminded parents of the severe consequences, such as expulsion, for students found with weapons or items resembling weapons on school grounds. He urged families to reinforce the importance of reporting any suspicious objects or behavior to a trusted adult immediately.
In a statement from Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS), officials expressed commitment to student safety and highlighted the effectiveness of their security measures. “During a routine screening at the school’s entrance, our security detection system flagged a possible prohibited item,” the statement read. “This incident underscores the effectiveness of our continued investments in advanced security technology and staffing.”
As the investigation continues, officials have not released additional information regarding Curtis’s motives for bringing the firearms to school. Community members are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any concerns to authorities.
The incident reflects ongoing national discussions about school safety and the measures being taken to protect students and staff from potential threats.
Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact local law enforcement.
