A commemorative ceremony will take place this Saturday, June 8, at 10 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial west of Saint-Germain Street in Rimouski, marking the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landing.

The Normandy battle of 1944, from D-Day on June 6 to the encirclement of the German army in Falaise on August 21, is a pivotal event in World War II, showcasing some of Canada‘s greatest military achievements.

Canadian sailors, soldiers, and airmen played a crucial role in the Allied invasion of Normandy.

The event welcomes the public, with an address from Rimouski’s Member of Parliament and Minister responsible for Bas-Saint-Laurent, Maïté Blanchette-Vézina.

Following the morning ceremony, a private invitation-only event will commence at noon at the Rimouski Hotel, featuring a pop-up museum and a four-course banquet.

Expected attendees include dignitaries, MPs, and mayors from Sayabec, Causapsal, Mont-Joli, and Rimouski, as well as guests from Gaspé, Saguenay, Trois-Rivières, and Montreal.

A special tribute will be paid in the afternoon ceremony to the three remaining Korean War veterans from the Joe Keable branch, aged between 92 and 94, who will be honored with new medals and personalized certificates from South Korea.

This regional event is organized in collaboration with the Joe Pearson DCM MM branch of Mont-Joli.
