Paul Mashatile Appointed as Deputy President of South Africa in 7th Administration

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced the appointment of Paul Mashatile as the Deputy President of South Africa in the newly formed seventh administration, marking his continuation in this significant role.

Mashatile, who previously held the same position in the sixth administration, was named as Deputy President by President Ramaphosa in a recent national address outlining the country’s new cabinet structure.

Assuming the Deputy President role in March 2023 after the departure of former Deputy President David Mabuza, Mashatile has been entrusted with key responsibilities and duties within the government.

During his tenure in the sixth administration, Deputy President Mashatile oversaw important areas such as Governance, State Capacity, Institutional Development, and the Justice, Crime Prevention, and Security Cabinet Committees.

Hailing from Gauteng, Mashatile’s political career has seen him serve as the Minister of Arts and Culture from 2010 to 2014, contributing significantly to the country’s cultural and artistic landscape.

His involvement in the Gauteng Provincial Government has been extensive, including roles as Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Finance and Economic Affairs, Housing, and Transport, Roads, and Public Works.

Before the advent of democracy in South Africa in 1994, Mashatile was actively engaged as an anti-apartheid activist, enduring arrests and a lengthy detention period under the oppressive Apartheid regime.

The appointment of Paul Mashatile as Deputy President reflects President Ramaphosa’s continued trust in Mashatile’s leadership and capabilities in steering the country forward amidst various challenges and opportunities.
