Leaked Audio Reveals Biden Struggling with Memory During Investigation

Washington, D.C. — A newly released audio tape reveals President Joe Biden struggling to recall significant events from his own life during a special counsel interview in October 2023. The interview was part of an investigation led by Special Counsel Robert Hur into Biden’s retention of classified documents from his time as vice president.
The audio, obtained by Axios, features Biden grappling with details like the year he left the vice presidency and the date of his son Beau’s death. At one point, he asked, “When did Beau die?” before his lawyer corrected him, stating it was 2015. Biden also faced difficulty recalling when he was elected, mistakenly noting it was 2017 instead of 2016.
Despite Biden’s aides previously denying any memory issues, the tape directly contradicts these claims. Ian Sams, who served as the White House spokesman at the time, declined to comment when asked about the leaked recording.
The audio has reignited discussions among Democrats and political analysts regarding the implications of Biden’s memory lapses on his political future, especially as he heads into the 2024 election. Critics have claimed that his cognitive struggles may have contributed to his party’s challenges in upcoming elections.
In a report released in February 2024, Hur characterized Biden as “a well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.” This assessment, along with Biden’s performance in the interview, seems to have fueled further scrutiny of his mental acuity.
Biden faced significant backlash after Hur’s report. In response, the president asserted, “My memory is fine,” although he later struggled during a debate against Donald Trump, which intensified concerns among voters about his age and mental clarity.
The Justice Department had previously withheld the audio, citing executive privilege. However, following a lawsuit from news organizations, the tape’s release has prompted further examination of Biden’s mental fitness amid a contentious political climate.
As the 2024 elections approach, Biden’s memory and health have emerged as focal points in the ongoing discourse surrounding his presidency. He continues to dismiss concerns about his age, emphasizing his capability and experience leading the nation.
