5.2 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes La Union, Philippines

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck La Union province on Saturday morning, May 24, 2025. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the quake hit at 10:36 a.m., with its epicenter located approximately 36 kilometers northwest of Luna town, at a depth of 17 kilometers.
The earthquake was classified as tectonic in origin, meaning it was caused by the movement of tectonic plates along fault lines. Seismologists reported varying intensities across northern Luzon, with intensity levels of 4 registered in Candon City and Vigan, and levels of 3 in Sinait, Ilocos Sur.
Intensity 2 was felt in several areas, including Bangued, Abra; Tagudin, Ilocos Sur; San Fernando, La Union; and Bani, Infanta, and Bolinao in Pangasinan. Notably, intensity 1 was recorded in areas where shaking was scarcely perceptible.
Phivolcs warned that while no immediate significant damage was expected from the quake, aftershocks could occur. They have advised residents to remain vigilant as aftershocks are common after seismic events like this one.
Reports from residents indicated that some areas experienced light to moderate shaking, prompting people to take precautionary measures. However, extensive damage or injuries were not immediately reported.
As the region is prone to seismic activities, local authorities are monitoring for any additional aftershocks.
