LOS ÁNGELES — Monterrey needs goals as they prepare to face Urawa Red Diamonds this Wednesday in the Club World Cup group stage. The match is crucial for coach Domenec Torrent‘s squad, who must score at least two goals to secure their spot in the next round.

So far in the tournament, Monterrey has drawn both of their initial matches, managing just one goal, scored by team captain and defender Sergio Ramos. Monterrey currently sits with two points and will depend heavily on their offense, which has struggled to find the net in previous games against Inter Milan and River Plate.

From April 6 to the present, Monterrey has played 10 matches across various competitions including the Concacaf Champions Cup and the league playoffs, netting 15 goals for an average of 1.5 goals per game. This falls short of the two goals needed to advance in the ongoing tournament in the United States.

Germán Berterame was Monterrey’s top scorer during the Clausura 2025 season, with seven goals, and he contributed four goals in the last 10 matches. Another forward, de la Rosa, is seen as a potential scorer for Wednesday’s match at Rose Bowl Stadium. However, he has only scored once in the last 10 matches.

Mexican forward has also struggled recently, without a league goal since last October. His only contributions to the score sheet recently came in the Concacaf Champions Cup, where he scored twice against Forge of Canada. Other players, including Nelson Deossa and Iker Fimbres, have had to step up as the scoring has been low.

Sergio Canales, one of Monterrey’s key players, is questionable for the match against Urawa Red Diamonds due to muscle discomfort. Moreover, Oliver Torres hasn’t scored since February. The team needs a resurgence from its attackers to advance beyond the group stage, currently sitting two points behind both Inter Milan and River Plate, who will meet in the group stage’s final match.
