Brazilian Tennis Players Face Tough Competition at US Open 2025 Qualifiers

New York, USA — The US Open 2025 qualifiers took place from August 18 to August 21, with four Brazilian tennis players competing for a spot in the main draw. Thiago Wild, Thiago Monteiro, and João Lucas Reis represented the men’s side, while Laura Pigossi was the sole female competitor.
Despite their efforts, none of the athletes secured a place in the main tournament, which runs from August 24 to September 7. The tournament format includes best-of-three sets for the qualifiers, contrasting with the best-of-five sets played in the main draw.
This year, the main draw will see 128 players, with 16 spots allocated to those who succeed in qualifying rounds. The Brazilian contingent included two directly qualified players: Beatriz Haddad Maia, ranked 20th, and João Fonseca, ranked 44th.
Thiago Wild, ranked 140th, aimed to reach the main draw for the third time but lost to Kazakhstan’s Dmitry Popko. Thiago Monteiro, seeking to compete in the main round for the seventh consecutive year, fell to American Murphy Cassone.
João Lucas Reis made his Grand Slam qualifying debut, qualifying due to previous withdrawals, but was eliminated by Alexander Blockx from Belgium.
Laura Pigossi, the only female competitor, fell short in her quest after losing to Slovenian Tamara Zidansek in the qualifiers. She had previously played in the main draws of other Grand Slams, seeking to make her mark at the US Open.
The main event is expected to attract top tennis players worldwide, with significant prizes as this year marks the tournament’s largest payout ever, totaling over $90 million. Each singles champion will earn $5 million, reflecting a substantial increase from the previous year.
Fans in Brazil can follow the tournament live on ESPN, SporTV, and Disney+.
