WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – After the tragic loss of four children in a house fire, the Columbus County Fire Marshal is urging the community to prioritize fire safety.

Wendy Gianni-King, the Community Risk Reduction Coordinator at the Wilmington Fire Department, emphasized the importance of prevention. “It’s life safety for the public and it’s life safety for the first responders as well,” she said.

In light of this incident, Gianni-King is advocating for increased public awareness surrounding fire safety practices. The fire claimed the lives of four young children earlier this week, highlighting a serious need for better education concerning fire prevention.

Authorities are working with community organizations to promote safety tips that can prevent future tragedies. “We want to ensure families know what to do in case of a fire, from escape plans to putting smoke alarms in their homes,” she added.

In an unrelated event, UNCW released a statement regarding student activities surrounding a tribute to Charlie Kirk. On Monday, Sept. 15, students painted a spirit rock in honor of Kirk, who was recently killed while speaking at a university. A confrontation ensued when another group tried to repaint the rock.

University police reported that while the conversation became confrontational, no charges were issued relating to the incident. “The UNCW spirit rock is not a memorial. It is a platform for freedom of expression,” officials underscored.

This incident brings light to the importance of respectful dialogue and expression within campus communities.

As fire safety remains a crucial topic, both incidents reflect the need for community engagement and proactive measures in tragic situations.
